Ben’s Canteen Cheese Bonanza

I’ve wanted to visit Ben’s Canteen for a while and it features on my Places to Visit list that I’m going to keep working through. When I found out that they were teaming up with pop-up Grill My Cheese, I was thrilled to get an invite down to finally try out the restaurant. A third restaurant is planned to join Clapham and Earlsfield sites at the new Battersea Power Station development later this year.

Liv and I headed to the Clapham branch just a short walk up St John’s Hill from Clapham Junction station. Coming straight from work it wasn’t too busy when we arrived but staff were friendly and the non cheesy music playlist was keeping us entertained but quiet enough for us to chat.

Gin vs Vodka at Ben's Canteen

As well as the cheese-fest, there was a Gin vs Vodka promotion with a menu of different gin and vodka-based cocktails available for £7.00. Each one was paired with Fever-Tree tonic or soda water. I was disappointed that my first choice of elderflower had run out but I had an equally delicious one with ginger while Liv chose one with cucumber (ew!).

For our starter we ordered falafel with a tasty harissa dip, (the prawns we wanted had also run out). We also had tortilla chips with an ingenious pestle and mortar used for Smashing guacamole!

Ben’s Canteen have a wide range of main courses including burgers and salads that sounded great, but I opted for the Lamb Patty Melt with Liv going for the vegetarian option of Cheemosas (like samosas but filled with oozing hot cheese).

On the cheese theme, Ben’s Canteen also offer a Nduja (spreadable spicy pork) Mac & Cheese which is on the menu as a regular dish.

My order had both cheddar and mozzarella cheese and a tender cut of lamb in between two slices of toasted sourdough bread – a turbocharged cheese toastie like the other ones Grill My Cheese offer at their Leather Lane Market pop-up with imaginative names like Slumdog Grillionaire. I wasn’t offered a steak knife but managed to get hold of one to help me cut through what felt like a whirlwind of flavours with harissa ketchup and caramelised onions inside.

The Cheemosas were a fair replacement for non-lamb/meat eaters but you have to really love cheese due to the fact they are simply deep fried pastry filled with cheese.

We also ordered sweet potato fries but when they were forgotten we didn’t complain as our mains were more than enough to fill us up without the sides!

That being said, we had to try out the dessert and we chose to share the DIY Doughnuts. This time the quirky surprise was the syringes of fillings brought to the table with the mountain of sweet, warm doughy balls. Chocolate, strawberry jam and vanilla custard were on hand to get messy and fill them up but they tasted perfect on their own too.
