I’ve wanted to visit Ben’s Canteen for a while and it features on my Places to Visit list that I’m going to keep working through. When I found out that they were teaming up with pop-up Grill My Cheese, I was thrilled to get an invite down to finally try out the restaurant. A third restaurant is planned to join Clapham and Earlsfield sites at the new Battersea Power Station development later this year.
Liv and I headed to the Clapham branch just a short walk up St John’s Hill from Clapham Junction station. Coming straight from work it wasn’t too busy when we arrived but staff were friendly and the non cheesy music playlist was keeping us entertained but quiet enough for us to chat.
Ben’s Canteen have a wide range of main courses including burgers and salads that sounded great, but I opted for the Lamb Patty Melt with Liv going for the vegetarian option of Cheemosas (like samosas but filled with oozing hot cheese).
On the cheese theme, Ben’s Canteen also offer a Nduja (spreadable spicy pork) Mac & Cheese which is on the menu as a regular dish.
My order had both cheddar and mozzarella cheese and a tender cut of lamb in between two slices of toasted sourdough bread – a turbocharged cheese toastie like the other ones Grill My Cheese offer at their Leather Lane Market pop-up with imaginative names like Slumdog Grillionaire. I wasn’t offered a steak knife but managed to get hold of one to help me cut through what felt like a whirlwind of flavours with harissa ketchup and caramelised onions inside.
We also ordered sweet potato fries but when they were forgotten we didn’t complain as our mains were more than enough to fill us up without the sides!
